Black Dog is a well-established brand of blended Scotch whisky with roots dating back to the late 19th century. Created by Sir Walter Millard and James Mackinlay, it's composed of malt and grain whiskies from Scotland. While its origins are Scottish, its significant market presence and bottling operations are in India, managed by Diageo India. The story of Black Dog whisky begins with Sir Walter Millard, a British gentleman employed in Calcutta (now Kolkata), India, during the late 19th century. Seeking a high-quality Scotch whisky for his personal enjoyment and potentially for import, he returned to Scotland in 1883. There, he partnered with James Mackinlay, a blender from Leith. Together, they crafted a blend that met Millard's standards. Sir Walter was passionate about salmon fishing on the Spey and Dee rivers in Scotland. He named the whisky blend "Black Dog" in honour of his favourite, most effective salmon fishing fly. This links the whisky's identity to leisure, tradition, and the Scottish landscape.  

• Nose: Often presents aromas of matured wood, malt, hints of sherry or dried fruits (like raisins), vanilla, and a touch of sweetness, possibly light peat or smoke depending on the expression.
• Palate: Characteristically smooth and mellow. Flavours can include honey, caramel, ripe fruits, subtle spice (like cinnamon or nutmeg), oak notes, and a balanced malty sweetness.

Neat: Sip it straight at room temperature to appreciate the full complexity of aromas and flavours. On the Rocks: Serve over a few ice cubes. Chilling slightly mutes the aroma but can make it feel smoother and more refreshing. With a Splash of Water: Adding a few drops of still water can open up the aromas and soften the palate.   With Soda or Mixer: Commonly enjoyed with soda water or cola, especially in casual settings.   In Cocktails: Works well in simple whisky cocktails like a Highball (whisky and soda with lemon) or a Rob Roy.
