Vat 69

Vat 69 is a classic blended Scotch whisky renowned for its historical significance and approachable character. Created by William Sanderson in 1882 after a tasting panel selected the 69th vat as the best among 100 blends, it offers a smooth, slightly sweet, and malty profile. The story of Vat 69 centres around its creator, William Sanderson. In 1882, wanting to launch his own proprietary blend, he meticulously created 100 different casks, each containing a unique blend of Scotch whiskies. To ensure impartiality and find the absolute best combination, he convened a panel of whisky experts. They tasted each of the 100 vats blind. The overwhelming favourite was the blend contained in the cask marked "69". Sanderson, respecting the panel's judgment, named his new whisky "Vat 69". This unique origin story has become legendary in the whisky world. Its inclusion in Shackleton's Antarctic expeditions further cemented its place in history.  

• Light and relatively simple. Hints of sweet malt, caramel, grain, perhaps a touch of pear or light spice.
• Smooth and gentle on entry. Dominant notes of malt sweetness, caramel, and cereal grains. Some find hints of light peat or smokiness, though it's generally not pronounced. A touch of spice can emerge.
• Relatively short to medium length. Lingering warmth with notes of malt, light sweetness, and a slightly dry finish.

Neat: To appreciate its straightforward character. On the Rocks: A cube or two of ice can open it up slightly. With Water: A small splash of water can soften it further. Simple Mixers: Works well in basic mixed drinks like a Scotch and Soda (Highball), Scotch and Ginger Ale, or with Cola. Its profile doesn't typically lend itself to complex cocktails.
