It's a whisky that prioritizes elegance and refinement over heavy peat or bold sherry influence. The 12 Year Old expression is the flagship, showcasing the distillery's signature style. Its approachable nature makes it a popular choice for those new to Scotch, as well as a refreshing alternative for experienced whisky drinkers. The distillery's large stills contribute to the spirit's light character, promoting extensive copper contact during distillation.

Story

The story of Glenkinchie begins in 1825, when brothers John and George Rate established the Milton Distillery in the fertile farmlands of East Lothian. A few years later, around 1837, it was officially renamed Glenkinchie, taking its name from the nearby Kinchie Burn, itself linked to the ancient de Quincey family who owned the land. Like many distilleries of its era, Glenkinchie faced challenges, leading to bankruptcy in 1853 and its temporary conversion into a sawmill. However, the late 19th century saw a resurgence. A group of Edinburgh investors, recognizing the growing demand for blended whiskies, revived the distillery under the guidance of Major James Grey. By 1890, Glenkinchie had been extensively rebuilt and expanded into the magnificent Victorian edifice we see today, complete with its iconic red-brick buildings. In 1914, it became a part of Scottish Malt Distillers (SMD), a group of Lowland distilleries, which later merged with The Distillers Company Limited (DCL) in 1925, eventually evolving into Diageo. Despite its long history, Glenkinchie's journey as a celebrated single malt brand truly began in 1998 when it was chosen as the Lowland representative for Diageo's "Classic Malts Selection." Today, it remains a beloved example of the Lowland style, continuing its tradition of producing light, elegant, and floral whiskies, while also proudly serving as the "Lowland Home of Johnnie Walker." In recent years, the distillery has undergone significant refurbishment, including the opening of a state-of-the-art visitor center in 2020, further cementing its place as a cornerstone of Scottish whisky heritage.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Light and aromatic, with notes of vanilla, freshly cut flowers (daffodil, blossom), citrus (lemon tart), and a subtle toasted malt hint. Can become sweeter and creamier with time.
  • Palate: Soft and mellow, initially sweet like crème anglaise or glazed butter, evolving into floral notes. Crisp mid-palate with hints of lemon zest, honey, and sometimes a touch of ginger or stewed fruits.

How to Enjoy

Neat: The best way to appreciate its subtle nuances. Pour into a tulip-shaped glass or a large balloon glass to concentrate the aromas. With a few drops of water: A small amount of water can open up the whisky, releasing more complex aromas and softening the palate. As an aperitif: Its light and appetising body makes it an excellent choice to enjoy before a meal. Chilled: While not traditional for single malts, some prefer Glenkinchie slightly chilled, especially in warmer climates, to enhance its refreshing qualities. In a highball: Its gentle nature makes it a good base for a light and refreshing highball with soda water and a lemon twist.

Perfect Pairings

  • Seafood: Sashimi, sushi, scallops, grilled white fish, or tempura prawns. Its light character complements the delicate flavors of seafood beautifully.
  • Soft Cheeses: Fresh goat's cheese, burrata, mozzarella, or mild creamy cheeses. The whisky's sweetness can balance the tanginess of the cheese.
  • Light Desserts: Lemon cheesecake, madeleines, or fruit tarts. The citrus and floral notes in the whisky will harmonise with these desserts.
  • Nuts: Sweet, nutty hazelnuts or almonds.
  • Charcuterie: Finocchiona (a Tuscan salami with fennel seeds) or other mild, herb-infused cured meats.
  • Salads: A Waldorf salad with its creamy and crisp textures can be a good match.
