Story

The story of Amrut single malt is one of ambition and innovation. Faced with a market traditionally dominated by Scotch, Amrut Distilleries dared to experiment with single malt production in India. The late Neelakanta Rao Jagdale's vision, coupled with the expertise of his team, led to the creation of a whisky that defied expectations. The name "Amrut" itself, meaning "nectar of the gods" in Sanskrit, reflects the distillery's aspirations. The initial international recognition for Amrut Fusion in the mid-2000s marked a turning point, proving that exceptional whisky could be crafted outside of traditional regions. Today, Amrut continues to honor its heritage while embracing innovation, crafting a diverse range of single malts that showcase the unique terroir of India.

Tasting Notes

  • Aromas: Often present notes of honey, vanilla, dried fruit (raisins, figs), citrus peel, and a hint of spice like cinnamon or cardamom. Some expressions may exhibit smoky or peaty undertones.
  • Palate: Rich and full-bodied, with flavors mirroring the aromas. Expect layers of fruitcake, toffee, dark chocolate, and warming spices. The tropical maturation often imparts a unique sweetness and depth.

How to Enjoy

Neat: To fully appreciate the complex aromas and flavors, try Amrut neat in a Glencairn glass or a tulip-shaped glass. Allow it to breathe for a few minutes before nosing and sipping. With a Drop of Water: Adding a small drop of room-temperature water can "open up" the whisky, releasing more aromas and slightly softening the intensity. Experiment to find your preference.   On the Rocks (Sparingly): If you prefer your whisky chilled, use large, slow-melting ice cubes to avoid diluting the spirit too quickly.

Perfect Pairings

  • Spicy Indian Cuisine: The robust flavors of Amrut can stand up beautifully to rich and spicy Indian dishes like biryani, tandoori meats, or curries. The whisky's fruitiness can complement the heat, while its spice notes echo the flavors in the food.
  • Dark Chocolate: The bitter notes of dark chocolate create a delightful contrast with the sweetness and fruitiness of many Amrut expressions.
  • Strong Cheeses: Mature cheddar or blue cheese can offer a savory counterpoint to the whisky's richness.
